While we here at spyder moto might be tempted to call the Can-Am Spyder RT-S just another motor car that has been adapted for a biker, the truth is that it has very little in common with a car. In fact, for anyone who has never had a motorcycle licence and wants to experience that amazing wind-in-the-face feeling but doesn’t want to take the plunge into two wheels, the Spyder could be the perfect solution.
As far as getting there goes, it’s a piece of cake. There’s no clutch, left hand shift lever or front brake pedal – it all comes via the single right foot pedal which also controls the transmission and braking to the rear wheel. Fortunately the Brembo four-piston calipers and 275mm discs are up to the task of hauling the 470kg trike to a stop.

In a straight line the Spyder’s V-twin is no slouch either, achieving 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds. But it’s when the road gets twisty that you really begin to understand why so few people choose this type of vehicle. The RT-S has a lot going for it – it’s a luxury touring machine with cruise control, electronically adjustable windscreen and stereo, plus a swanky new Green Shadow paint job.
It also has a host of rider-focused safety technology co-developed by Bosch. Traction and stability control increase braking to the outside wheels in a hard turn, or cut power to the engine if it’s being tipped over – a very real danger with some three-wheelers.
