The dependent variable was respondents’ agreement (strongly agree, somewhat agree, or disagree) that light/low cigarettes are smoother on the throat and chest than regular-strength cigarettes. Independent variables included the number of cigarettes per day and quit intention (not at all likely to, within the next year, in the next six months, or very sure). Additional socio-demographic variables included gender, age, annual household income, education level (low: =high school; moderate: some college/tech/trade school; high: university degree), and minority ethnic status.
